What is the Cognitive sensing?

It builds on the concept of fully adaptive radar and extends them by drawing on the forms of human and other animal cognition. In fact, cognitive computing and more general sensing and signal processing are making rapid progress in other related disciplines. Radar is just an example, where cognitive methods have the potential to improve performance and open new areas of application, especially those that require autonomy.

Cognitive radar sensing is combined with adaptive feedback, which includes received echoes to guide the design of future waveforms. It also includes the repositioning and scanning direction of the radar platform. In addition, it implies some more subtle requirements, such as the explicit generation and use of memory. The radar itself needs to understand and respond to its perception of the environment. It is possible that it must be done on a time scale with pulse transmission down to the millisecond level.

Cognitive radar sensing has also been inspired by cognitive observations in natural systems. The cognitive processing architecture is shown in the figure. This architecture has many features, such as multiple feedback loops, multiple parallel processing, dynamic creation and memory development, the link between perception and action, and the requirements for permanent training and learning. Cognition offers great potential for improving radar performance, but it also presents significant challenges. Processing echoes converts them into good, understandable images and uses them in reliable decisions. If the radar system has accurate images and understanding of the surrounding environment, it may lead to greater autonomy.
